Okie-dokie....

So I got me a 95 YJ, replaced all the fliuds cept for the clutch, brake and steering fluids. Just replaced the whole cooling system today.

Its the Sahara edition, green/tan Big Smile

IMG

Next comes the lift and tires. Already decided on the BFG all terrains, black rims......

Now to decide on to go with a 2.5" or a 4" lift? Im not planning on doing any rock crawling competitions, but I do want to have fun. Its my weekend vehicle, and I want to be able to run 6-10 hours down the road without getting too fatigued. (Leakey, or Red River trip)

After the lift, its an ARB front bumper and rear, and who knows what else Big Smile

Thats the kicker, I can do a 2.5 and run 31-32s, or do a 4" and run 33s.

And Ive got about 4-5" of travel on my garage door, and I want to keep it in the garage......so thats another delima.

I'd go with 31's unless you want to swap gears..

31's and a Rubicon Express or Old Man Emu lift.

Lots of good info here:
www.jeepforum.com

I like this guy for parts, including lifts.
http://www.dpgoff-road.com/
I bought my 3 core radiator from him and he's a wealth of info.

Edit:
Wishbone is correct, 33's will probably need to be regeared, that's why 31's are best.

Cool project! My buddy let me borrow his Jeep after my Toyota got crushed for a couple weeks. I didn't want to give it back! Keep us posted. Cool

What he said. Don't think you'll be happy with how it turns 35's unless you do the gears. I think you'll be happier with the 31's if you're going to spend significant time on the highway too. Small lift goes a long way on a Jeep. Went around around several bogged down trucks with big lifts and tires in my 86 Wrangler, and it was stock.

Glad to see the Jeep fanatics among us. I'm on my tenth Jeep and could not imagine ever buying another type of vehicle. My first was a '79 CJ7. They sure have improved the quality of workmanship during the past 30 years. Thumb Up

What size tires are stock for a YJ? I don't think 31's will give you what you want if you are interested in lifting and trail climbing. I have 32's on my CJ7 and will have 33's next time. It all depends on what you are going to do with it. Mine is used for cruising around town and gets off road use occasionally so larger tires and lift are fine for me. I don't take long trips in mine. I hope you love your jeep as much as I love mine. Peace

I was in the same boat as you. Had to make sure it fit in the garage. I went with 285-75-16's. Got new wheels and a 2 1/2 in lift. Just did all this a couple of weeks ago. Thumb Up IMG

If it's a 4cyl it should have 4.11 gears, and will turn 33's OK with 4" of lift.
Problem there is taking off you'll be working the clutch more (maybe to the point of eating them up rather fast).

If it's a 6 cylinder, it probably has 3.55's and if you put 33's on it you won't use 5th gear unless you have a good tail wind.

(Talking stick shifts on both)

4" and 33's looks best. But the larger tires and extra weight work steering components more. What may be tolerable now, may need replaced when you go bigger, or soon after.

With a 4" kit and such short wheelbase, you'll probably have to do a T case drop and a SYE (slip yoke eliminator) to keep buzz to a minimum.

Be sure to get a dropped pitman arm to go with your new spring set.

With the new Jeeps you don't have lockouts so one side is always engaged kinda sorta (only divorced at T case unless you have the vaccuum disconnect D30 which sucks so trash that and make it a regular D30).........anyway, with one side not fully free spinning there is a bit more tire wear.

Don't go cheap if you're gonna daily drive it. Some leafs cost more than others, but those little pastic tabs and stuff do make things just a little nicer/quieter.

If only going 2.5" and no more, for ultimate cush, might want to check on some Old Man Emu springs.

If you're gonna add racks/beefy bumpers and winches down the road, get a heavier duty spring set. They ride like crap in the col (tires hard) and gravel on a paved road can feel burly. But when you hit the big bumps at some speed they should be in their best working range and make your spine thank you for the beefier purchase.

Use air tools to install your lift, especially when dropping the transmission Xmember /skidplate. Use Kroil to soak the bolts before hand.

Maybe you won't have to, being in Texas. Up here...............yeah, snapped off bolts are common when working with "best quality" Chrysler fasteners that have been subjected to less than ideal maintenance Wink

Normal YJ/XJ tire size I think is 29" and you will see a little performance drop if going to 31's with an automatic transmission and 3.55 gears. It's tolerable IMHO.

I have 32" MTR's on my ZJ, which has an auto, but is a 318 V8. It slowed it down a bunch, but again tolerable (3.73 gears). I can make it almost as zippy as before.......but then the bad fuel economy just gets worse.

You could do a "Spring over" and use your stock springs, but there I think that nets about 5" of lift- maybe more than you want.

Whatever you do, don't do a shackle lift. For a trail rig maybe, or farm lot turd yeah, but not anything going down the road.

IMHO I'd go with a spring lift, or spring over, and even then I'd get heavier duty shackles.

Remember, in compression the front axle tries to move forward during upward travel. Not the smartest of systems IMHO. You can do what they call a shackle reversal, which should eliminate wander-itis and smooth out the ride, but then in compression the axle moves back, and may drive the tire into the body (if not clearanced).

There are plenty of options to mess up..........er, "enhance" your Jeep.

Just be sure to do the upgrades fully.

Big tires..........might want a beefier drag link and a steering box brace too.
If you wheel it you'll probably end up with a repair and the parts anyway, so get them installed so you don't break (as easily).

Oh, those really cool braided longer stainless brake lines? Yeah, relocate your rubber ones lower and avoid a pinch that takes set and blows it in town, coming up at the intersection, cars on both sides of the road.

FWIW I like Rubicon Express parts. Not the cheapest but they seem a little better (at least their control arms were kick arse).

Ground clearance is crux of the matter, getting an axle on the ground is what gets you stuck. The only way to gain ground clearance is tire size.

See how big you can go with a stock set-up. If that isn't big enough only raise it the minimum to accommodate the tires you want.

Raising a Jeep puts many new stresses on the drive line, especially drive shafts, universals etc. Also the steering system will get squirrelly at some point.

It's like our bows, when you adjust one spec it effects all the specs.

You could just buy a winch Peace
